Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - Following a recent live broadcast with Northeast Radio SD, Republican incumbent Senator Glen Vilhauer reaffirmed his unwavering dedication to District 5, outlining a comprehensive legislative platform ahead of the upcoming primary election on June 2nd. A Tripp native who has called Watertown home for over 45 years, Senator Vilhauer brings a deep, lifelong commitment to community service and unparalleled financial expertise to the South Dakota State Senate.

Vilhauer’s extensive record of public leadership forms the core foundation of his tenure in Pierre. A retired Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a ten-year veteran of the South Dakota Army National Guard, his background seamlessly blends rigorous fiscal discipline with a deep sense of civic duty. Before his election to the State Senate, Vilhauer spent eight years on the Watertown City Council—serving a portion of that time as Deputy Mayor—and dedicated nine years to the local hospital board, experiences that gave him an intimate understanding of the unique infrastructure and healthcare needs of his constituents.

A Proven Steward of Taxpayer Dollars

As a critical member of the high-stakes Appropriations Committee, Senator Vilhauer has positioned himself as a steadfast guardian of state funds. Over the past two legislative sessions, he was instrumental in crafting and delivering a strictly balanced budget to the full legislature. Despite rising economic debates and an increasing number of opposing votes, Vilhauer successfully guided the legislation to passage and secured the Governor’s signature, preventing gridlock and ensuring vital state operations remained fully funded.

Life has been incredibly good to my family, and public service is my way of giving something back,” Vilhauer noted during the interview, pointing to his three children and six grandchildren who live close by. “When I look at the next generation, it drives me to ensure that the economic opportunities I enjoyed in South Dakota remain strong and viable for decades to come.

Confronting Rising Costs and Enhancing Affordability

Acknowledging the direct economic pressures facing everyday families in District 5, Senator Vilhauer emphasized that long-term affordability is his top priority. While recent legislative efforts have successfully introduced relief measures for property taxes, Vilhauer cautions that the broader conversation surrounding inflation and cost-of-living increases is far from over. He plans to aggressively address compounding financial strains, including escalating homeowner’s insurance premiums, utility costs, groceries, and medical expenses.

To systematically combat these issues, Vilhauer advocates for a robust expansion of South Dakota’s economic foundation. Rather than relying on short-term fixes, he believes the state must prioritize sustainable economic development by welcoming new businesses and actively incentivizing existing local corporations to expand. By broadening the overall tax base, the state can naturally alleviate financial burdens on individual property owners while simultaneously fostering top-tier employment opportunities.

Championing Education and Demanding Political Decorum

A relentless defender of public education, Senator Vilhauer continues to support strong state funding for local schools and workforce development centers. He has been a vocal champion for Lake Area Tech, a landmark institution in Watertown, having successfully sponsored funding legislation in previous sessions to enhance its facilities and programs. Vilhauer remains dedicated to shielding public education from structural budget cuts, asserting that local classrooms are the single greatest driver of the state’s future economic health.

Beyond specific policy measures, Vilhauer expressed deep concern regarding the growing polarization and lack of cooperation observed in recent legislative sessions. He strongly called for a return to civility, decorum, and standard institutional teamwork within the state capitol. Asserting that the legislature is no place for personal agendas or political gamesmanship, Vilhauer vowed to continue working collaboratively with all 105 members of the House and Senate to deliver meaningful results for District 5.
