Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - A Denver man has been sentenced to 45 years in federal prison for leading a long‑running drug trafficking conspiracy involving methamphetamine, fentanyl, and firearms in western South Dakota, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota.
U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier sentenced Juan Sertuche, 43, on May 22, 2026, after a federal jury convicted him in January of Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine, Conspiracy to Distribute Fentanyl, and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime.
Sertuche received 40 years on the drug conspiracy charges and an additional five years on the firearm charge. The sentences were ordered to run consecutively. He must also serve five years of supervised release after completing his prison term and pay a $300 special assessment.
According to evidence presented at trial, Sertuche led a drug distribution network from 2002 through September 2023, supplying approximately 500 pounds of methamphetamine and more than 33,000 fentanyl pills to sub‑distributors operating in the Rapid City and Pine Ridge areas.
Investigators testified that:
·        Couriers working for Sertuche were stopped while transporting 19 pounds of methamphetamine intended for distribution in Rapid City.
·        Sertuche was arrested in September 2023 during a traffic stop in Jackson County, where officers found 1,500 fentanyl pills he planned to distribute.
·        Even after his arrest, Sertuche continued directing others to collect drug proceeds, travel to Denver for additional supply, and obtain firearms to trade for drugs.
·        Law enforcement recovered multiple firearms tied to the conspiracy, including two fully automatic machine guns, before they could be exchanged for narcotics.
The case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Wyoming State Highway Patrol, and the North Metro Denver Drug Task Force. Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson and Assistant U.S. Attorney Paige Petersen handled the prosecution.
Sertuche was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
