GFP Finalizes 2026 Deer Season License Changes, Reduces Tags in Multiple Units

Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - The South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Commission has finalized several changes to the 2026 deer hunting season, including a major shift in license types and reductions to both East River and West River deer tags.

The most significant statewide change affects archery and muzzleloader hunters. Beginning in 2026, all archery and muzzleloader “any deer” licenses will convert to “any buck deer” licenses, following Commission approval this spring. GFP said the adjustment aligns license types with updated herd‑management goals and reduces antlerless harvest pressure in key areas.

In addition to the license‑type change, the Commission approved tag reductions across multiple firearm units:

·        East River Deer: 700 licenses cut across 12 hunting units

·        West River Deer: 700 licenses cut across three hunting units

GFP staff told the Commission the reductions were targeted toward units showing population stress or where antlerless harvest needed to be scaled back to support long‑term herd stability.

The finalized changes follow the standard public hearing and comment process. GFP will publish the full unit‑by‑unit allocation tables in its annual deer‑season packet later this spring.

Hunters can review finalized rules and upcoming allocation details at gfp.sd.gov. As always, hunters should confirm all regulations directly with GFP, as statewide and unit‑specific rules may continue to evolve.
