Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - Governor Larry Rhoden officially launched his campaign for a full term as Governor of South Dakota on Tuesday, announcing his bid to a crowd gathered in the lobby of the Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City.
Rhoden, a Republican who ascended to the governorship earlier this year, is seeking the party’s nomination in the June 2, 2026, primary election. His announcement marks his formal entry into what is expected to be a competitive primary field, which includes candidates like U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson, Jon Hansen, and Toby Doeden.
In his remarks, Rhoden emphasized his commitment to conservative principles and maintaining the state's status as a leader on the national stage.
“I am running for a full term as Governor of South Dakota!” Rhoden announced. “I’ve remained focused on keeping our state strong, safe, and free. And I’m going to keep doing the people’s work. Because when I’m working, South Dakota’s winning.”
Rhoden’s campaign is built on his long political history in the state, including serving in both the State House and the State Senate before spending six years as Lieutenant Governor. He assumed the top office in January 2025.
His supporters point to his 10 months as governor—during which he secured legislative approval for a $650 million new state penitentiary and focused on property tax relief—as evidence of his practical, policy-focused approach.
Rhoden’s running mate, Lieutenant Governor Tony Venhuizen, introduced the Governor, praising his steady governing style.
“He is exactly what South Dakota needs right now: a steady, responsible governor who protects what’s working, fixes what isn’t, and never forgets where he comes from,” Venhuizen said. “He’s South Dakota forged and Built to Last.”
Citing the successful partnership he had with the previous administration, Rhoden stated his intent to build upon that record, saying, “The Noem-Rhoden Administration made South Dakota a beacon to the rest of the nation—and I intend to keep it that way.”
The campaign enters the race with significant early momentum. Recent public polling has shown Rhoden statistically tied for the lead in the Republican primary race, even before his official announcement. Voters interested in learning more about the campaign can visit GovernorLarryRhoden.com.
