Northeast Radio SD News - White, SD - First responders contained a grain bin fire Sunday morning west of White, South Dakota, resulting in an estimated $35,000 in total damage to both the structure and its contents.
The incident was reported at approximately 8:40 a.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2025, near the intersection of SD Highway 30 and 475th Avenue. The White Fire Department and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office immediately responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, crews observed smoke emanating from the bin’s vents. The active fire was located near the fan inlet at the base of the structure. Firefighters worked to expose and suppress the blaze, which required removing the corn stored in the bin.
Preliminary information suggests the fire may have been caused by an equipment failure that ignited the corn at the bottom of the structure.
The bin contained an estimated 6,000 bushels of corn, valued at approximately $20,000, which was destroyed or damaged. Damage to the grain bin and associated equipment is estimated at $15,000. Crews remained on the scene for just over an hour to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
