Hamlin County Deputy Injured in Alleged Assault Near Lake Poinsett; Lake Norden Woman Arrested
Northeast Radio SD News – Lake Poinsett, SD - A Hamlin County Sheriff’s deputy was injured Wednesday night after being assaulted while responding to a welfare check, according to the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched at 8:23 p.m. to check on an individual believed to be traveling within Hamlin County. The South Dakota Highway Patrol and Lake Norden Police Department assisted in locating the person.
Later that evening, a Hamlin County deputy found the individual just south of the intersection of South Dakota Highway 28 and 192nd Street, less than one mile east of Lake Poinsett. Additional officers from Lake Norden Police and the Highway Patrol responded to assist.
As officers attempted to take the individual into custody, the Sheriff’s Office says the person allegedly assaulted a deputy with a cutting instrument, injuring the deputy. The deputy was transported by Estelline Ambulance to a local hospital for medical care.
The suspect — Meghan Koistinen, 20, of Lake Norden — was arrested on multiple charges, including:
· Aggravated Assault Against Law Enforcement Officer (Class 2 Felony)
· Obstructing Officer, Jailer, Firefighter
· Disorderly Conduct
· Resisting Arrest
Aggravated Assault Against Law Enforcement is a Class 2 Felony in South Dakota, carrying a maximum penalty of 25 years in the state penitentiary, a fine of up to $50,000, or both.
The Sheriff’s Office said the incident remains under investigation and no additional information is being released at this time. All defendants are presumed innocent under the U.S. Constitution.
