Hamlin County Sheriff Warns Residents About Fake Walmart PlayStation 5 Scam Calls

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a scam phone call circulating in the area involving a fake Walmart purchase of a PlayStation 5.

According to the report, residents have received automated calls claiming that a PlayStation 5 — costing roughly $900 — has been charged to a Walmart account registered in their name. One version of the message states:

“A preauthorized purchase of $919.45 for a PlayStation 5 and 3D headset has recently been placed on a Walmart account registered in your name and phone number. If you did not make this purchase, press one now to cancel the order or immediately call us back on the same number to speak with our Walmart support.”

The sheriff’s office says the call uses what is almost certainly an AI‑generated voice and is not a legitimate communication from Walmart.

Officials warn that the scam is designed to alarm victims with a large‑dollar purchase and then trick them into providing bank or credit card information under the guise of processing a refund.

What Residents Should Do

Authorities urge anyone receiving the call to pause and independently check their financial accounts for unauthorized activity — without using any phone number provided by the caller.

·         If fraudulent charges are found: Contact your bank or financial institution immediately and report the incident to law enforcement.

·         If no fraudulent activity exists: Simply ignore the call. Do not press any buttons and do not call the number back.

The sheriff’s office notes that residents do not need to contact law enforcement solely because they received one of these scam calls. Reports should be made only if fraud has occurred.
