Hazel Woman Injured, Arrested on DUI Charges After Crash North of Hazel

Northeast Radio SD News – Hazel, SD - A 23‑year‑old Hazel woman was injured and later arrested following a single‑vehicle crash Friday night north of Hazel, according to the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office.
Watertown Regional Dispatch received the 911 call at 10:34 p.m. on July 10 reporting a crash on Mustang Avenue near 180th Street, approximately one mile north of Hazel.
The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Norden Ambulance, Hazel Fire Department, and Hazel Medical First Responders responded to the scene.
A preliminary investigation found the vehicle was traveling on Mustang Avenue when it crossed the opposite lane, entered the ditch, and struck an approach, causing it to become airborne. After landing back in the ditch, the vehicle re‑entered the roadway, crossed both lanes, and came to rest in the ditch.
The driver was transported by Lake Norden Ambulance to Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
Following the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office arrested the driver on the following charges:
· Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
· Possession of Marijuana (2 ounces or less)
· Driving Without a Valid License
· Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility
She was transported to and booked into the Codington County Detention Center.
Crews remained on scene for about two hours. BES Towing and the South Dakota Highway Patrol also assisted.
The crash remains under investigation. All defendants are presumed innocent under the U.S. Constitution. No additional information is being released at this time.
