Highway Patrol Releases Latest ‘Operation: Prairie Thunder’ Results Following Two-Day Watertown Sweep

Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released the latest enforcement statistics from “Operation: Prairie Thunder”, detailing the outcome of a recent two-day localized operation in Watertown, as well as the staggering cumulative totals from the last six months of the initiative.


Operation 11: Watertown Sweep Results

During the two-day period of February 26 and February 27, 2026, law enforcement agencies focused their efforts on Watertown for “Operation 11”.

The targeted sweep resulted in the arrest of 11 individuals. Drug-related offenses made up a significant portion of the enforcement action:


·        Total Drug Charges: 25

·        Felony Drug Charges: 4

·        Misdemeanor Drug Charges: 21

·        Custody Breakdown: 6 individuals were taken into custody with a drug charge, while 5 were taken into custody without a drug charge. Additionally, 9 individuals with a drug charge were cited and released on a promise to appear (POA).


Traffic enforcement during the two-day Watertown operation was also heavy, with patrol officers issuing 54 citations and 142 warnings. Officers also recorded 2 DUI arrests and cited 5 individuals for driving with revoked licenses. Furthermore, ICE contacts during the 48-hour window resulted in 4 individuals contacted, 4 interviewed, and 4 taken into custody.


Six-Month Cumulative Impact (August 2025 - February 2026)

The newly released data also sheds light on the broader, ongoing impact of Operation: Prairie Thunder. Cumulative totals tracking the operation from August 27, 2025, through February 27, 2026, reveal a massive scale of statewide law enforcement activity.


Over the past six months, the operation has resulted in 443 total individuals taken into custody.


Cumulative Criminal and Drug Apprehensions:

·        Total Drug Charges: 1,109 (including 318 felony charges and 791 misdemeanor charges).

·        Warrants Served: 249 (including 81 felony warrants and 168 misdemeanor warrants).

·        Absconders Caught: 20 individuals, including 16 on parole and 4 on probation.

·        Seizures: Law enforcement seized 8 guns and $8,064.00 in U.S. currency.


Cumulative Gang, ICE, and Traffic Statistics:

·        Cartel / Gang Activity: Officers have identified 10 individuals and apprehended 9 connected to cartel or gang activity.

·        ICE Contacts: 93 individuals have been contacted and 95 interviewed, resulting in 71 individuals taken into custody by ICE.


Traffic Enforcement: A staggering 2,244 citations and 2,725 warnings have been issued since August. This includes 42 DUI arrests and 122 citations for revoked licenses.
