Careless Driving Cited After Truck Rolls into Water in Hamlin County

Northeast Radio SD News - Hazel, SD - Emergency crews responded to a rollover crash near 447th Avenue and 180th Street on Tuesday afternoon, September 22, after a passerby reported a vehicle partially submerged in water.


The 911 call came in at 2:33 p.m., prompting the dispatch of Lake Norden Ambulance, Hazel Fire Department, and Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office. First responders arrived to find a truck with its cab halfway underwater.

According to the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle had been traveling northbound on 447th Avenue when it crossed the center line, entered the ditch, and rolled into a nearby body of water.


Both occupants were able to exit the vehicle safely. The passenger sustained minor injuries and was evaluated on scene by EMS personnel. The driver, a 19-year-old man from Culbertson, Montana, was cited for Careless Driving and Not Wearing a Seatbelt.


BES Towing assisted with vehicle recovery. The crash remains under investigation by the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office.
