Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Watertown School Board has paved the way for a recreation upgrade at Mellette Elementary School, approving a $71,430.00 bid for state-of-the-art playground equipment during its March 9 meeting.
The project, slated for completion during the 2026-2027 academic year, aims to provide students with a modern, safe, and developmentally engaging play environment.
A Future-Focused Investment
The contract was awarded to My Turn Playsystems through a Sourcewell cooperative bid, securing a 10% discount and ensuring competitive pricing. While the total job cost is estimated at $71,430, the base equipment sale accounted for $51,628.50 after discounts.
The remaining funds cover critical turnkey installation services, including:
· Professional Installation: $22,245.00 for labor performed by a Certified Playground Safety Inspector.
· Safety Surfacing: Engineered wood “flex fiber” surfacing designed for high-impact swing areas.
· Logistics: Freight, border timbers, stakes, and an ADA-compliant playground ramp to ensure accessibility for all students.
The project is a key component of the district’s 2026-2027 capital outlay plan, marking a long-term commitment to maintaining high-quality facilities at Mellette.
Safety Discussions and Design Features
The proposed “Synergy” series structure is designed for children ages 5 to 12 and boasts a user capacity of 65 students. Featured play events include the rapid Velo Slide, a Lumen Tunnel, and specialized climbers such as the Via and Terrex systems to build upper-body strength and coordination.
During the meeting, Board Member Jean Moulton raised a specific safety question regarding a “kite” or “wing” aesthetic feature atop the structure, expressing concern that it might catch high South Dakota winds.
Business Manager Heidi Clausen assured the board. “We will look into that... we’ll ensure that the equipment that we order is safe and good for Mellette Elementary,” Clausen stated.
Board President Jon Iverson echoed the sentiment about his own grandkids, that the project benefits the community, noting, “It will be fun to take them up to see the new equipment next year.”
Ready for the Next Generation
The new playground is specifically engineered to meet or exceed ASTM F1487 and CPSC playground safety standards. The custom configuration features a vibrant purple-and-gold color scheme, consistent with local school pride.
According to the proposal, site preparation and installation are expected to take place in 2026, provided the site is level and utilities are in place prior to the installation team’s arrival.
