Community Events & Youth Programs
Goss Opera House Summer Camps: The Goss Opera House is offering free creative arts programs this summer, funded by the Watertown Area Community Foundation.
June 24: "Passport to the Arts" day camp for students entering grades K-6, featuring global crafts and dance.
August Programs: Two Missoula Children's Theatre productions are scheduled for grades 1-12. Auditions for Beauty Lou and the Country Beast begin August 3, followed by Cinderella on August 8. Every registered student is guaranteed a role.
Youth Council Philanthropy: The Watertown Area Community Foundation’s Youth Council—comprised of local high school juniors and seniors—awarded $15,000 in grants to nine organizations.
Top Recipients: The Watertown Area Foster Closet, Joy Ranch, and the Goss Opera House each received $2,000.
Impact: Additional funds will support the Boys & Girls Club and youth transportation initiatives.
Hazardous Waste Disposal: A free household hazardous waste disposal event is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 8:00 AM to noon at the Watertown Wastewater Treatment Facility.
Accepted Items: Oil-based paint, gasoline, pool chemicals, and lithium-ion batteries.
Excluded Items: Electronics, tires, used oil, and medical waste will not be accepted.
Lake Area Technical College (LATC) Updates
Emergency Simulation: On the morning of Thursday, April 23, LATC will host its first large-scale emergency simulation since 2018.
Scenario: A simulated narcotics investigation involving law enforcement, nursing, and med-fire rescue students.
Public Advisory: Residents should expect simulated gunfire, highly visible "victims," and a temporary closure of Arrow Avenue between 9th and 11th Streets Northeast starting around 9:00 AM.
Recent Safety Incident: Fire crews were called to the LATC campus on Tuesday afternoon (April 14) following reports of a smoke odor in the 100 Building.
Resolution: The source was traced to a faulty rooftop air handling unit. The building was cleared for re-entry after approximately 1.5 hours.
Legal & Political News
Federal Sentencing: Nicholas Ketches, a 34-year-old man from Vermillion, was sentenced to over 20 years in federal prison for the attempted production and transportation of child pornography.
Case Details: Ketches used platforms like Omegle and Snapchat to groom a 14-year-old girl in 2022. He was arrested while attempting to meet the minor at her home.
Election Bid: Revillo minister Emilia Enquist has officially entered the race for the South Dakota House of Representatives in District 4.
Campaign: Running as the sole Democrat, her platform focuses on rural families and economic development. She will proceed directly to the November ballot while five Republican candidates compete in the June 2 primary.
