After more than 25 years of dedicated service promoting Northeast South Dakota’s tourism industry, Rosie Smith has announced she will step down as Executive Director of Glacial Lakes & Prairies Tourism effective August 1.
Smith has been a driving force behind the region’s tourism growth, championing outdoor recreation, community events, local attractions, and small businesses across the Glacial Lakes and Prairie region. Her leadership helped position Northeast South Dakota as a destination for travelers seeking authentic experiences and small‑town hospitality.
“Working to promote and grow tourism in Northeast South Dakota has been a privilege and deeply rewarding in so many ways,” Smith said. “Promoting outdoor recreation, community events, local attractions, and small businesses throughout our region has been my main mission and life’s work.”
Throughout her tenure, Smith collaborated with countless partners in the South Dakota visitor industry, building relationships that strengthened the state’s tourism network and elevated local communities.
“I am grateful for the many people in the South Dakota Visitor Industry whom I’ve had the joy of working with along the way and who have had a positive impact on my life,” she added. “Hopefully, I’ve done the same for their journey as well.”
Smith’s announcement marks the end of an era for Glacial Lakes & Prairies Tourism, which has long served as a cornerstone of regional promotion and development. Her decision to retire reflects a desire to embrace new adventures and enjoy life beyond the office.
“Working nearly half my life to promote tourism to Northeast South Dakota has been quite a ride,” Smith said. “Now it feels like the right time for me to embrace new adventures and enjoy living life.”
Smith closed her message with a simple farewell that reflects her lifelong passion for travel: “Safe Travels Ahead.”
