South Dakota Opens $5 Million Grant Program to Equip Volunteer Firefighters With New PPE

Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - Volunteer fire departments across South Dakota can now apply for a share of $5 million in new state grant funding to purchase critical personal protective equipment (PPE), according to an announcement Wednesday from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The funding was approved during the 2026 Legislative Session and signed into law by Governor Larry Rhoden, who said the investment is essential to keeping volunteer firefighters safe on the job.

Our firefighters deserve proper equipment and facilities to keep them safe and prepared for the dangers they face every day,” Rhoden said. “I’ve been a volunteer fireman my whole life, so I know firsthand how necessary an investment like this is.”

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is now accepting applications from departments with at least 70% volunteer membership. Eligible agencies may use the funds to purchase essential PPE, including helmets, coats, pants, gloves, boots, breathing apparatuses, and other gear required to meet national safety standards.

DPS Cabinet Secretary Bob Perry said the program will help departments that continue to face financial strain due to reduced donations and delayed fundraising efforts.

Our volunteer firefighters are often the first to arrive when disaster strikes,” Perry said. “This grant program helps them acquire the equipment they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.”

State Fire Marshal Doug Hinkle added that many departments are struggling to replace outdated or aging gear, and the new funding will help direct resources to the areas of greatest need.

The program was created under Senate Bill 136, sponsored by Rep. Eric Emery and Sen. Kevin Jensen, which passed unanimously. Application materials are being distributed by mail and email, and departments may apply through August 1, 2026.

More information and application access are available through the South Dakota State Fire Marshal’s website.
