South Dakota Reports 74 Human Cases of West Nile Virus as of September 26

Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - As of September 26, South Dakota has reported a total of 74 human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV), according to the latest data. The cases span 30 counties across the state, and tragically, four fatalities have been attributed to the virus.


The counties reporting confirmed human WNV cases include: Aurora, Beadle, Bon Homme, Brookings, Brown, Corson, Codington, Charles Mix, Clay, Douglas, Grant, Gregory, Haakon, Hamlin, Hand, Hughes, Hutchinson, Lawrence, Lincoln, Marshall, Meade, Miner, Minnehaha, Pennington, Roberts, Sanborn, Stanley, Spink, Yankton, and Walworth.


Additional Surveillance Data

In addition to the confirmed cases, nine human viremic blood donors have been identified in Brookings, Brown, Codington, Meade, Minnehaha, and Pennington counties.

Mosquito surveillance has also indicated the presence of the virus across the state. Seven counties have reported positive mosquito pools: Beadle, Brown, Brookings, Codington, Hughes, Lincoln, and Minnehaha.


National and Predictive Context

Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a total of 1,137 human WNV cases across 42 states as of September 23.
