Two Fatally Injured in Multi-Vehicle Collision Near Reliance

Northeast Radio SD News - Reliance, SD - A multi-vehicle collision claimed two lives and left several others injured on Friday afternoon in Lyman County. The crash occurred at approximately 3:44 p.m. on Interstate 90, five miles west of Reliance.
According to preliminary reports from the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the incident began when a 2025 Kenworth traveling westbound near mile marker 244 slowed down due to a potential crash ahead. A 2008 Mercury Sable then collided with the rear of the semi-truck, triggering a chain reaction involving three additional vehicles: a 2025 Ford F-150, a 2013 Ford F-150, and a 2010 GMC Yukon.
Authorities identified weather conditions, specifically whiteout visibility, as a contributing factor in the accident.
The driver of the Mercury Sable, a 28-year-old male from Colome, and a front-seat passenger, a 27-year-old male from Martin, were pronounced deceased at the scene. Two other passengers in the Sable, a 27-year-old male from Alexandria and a 26-year-old male from Hartford, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The collision resulted in several other injuries across the involved vehicles:
· In the 2025 Ford F-150, the 71-year-old driver and two passengers, ages 72 and 46, sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries. A 19-year-old passenger was uninjured.
· The 59-year-old driver and 54-year-old passenger of the 2013 Ford F-150 both sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Neither was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
· The 52-year-old driver of the 2010 GMC Yukon sustained minor injuries.
· The 50-year-old driver of the Kenworth semi-truck was uninjured.
Names of the deceased are being withheld pending the notification of family members.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash. Officials noted that all information released at this time is preliminary.
