Watertown Fire Rescue Marks 25th Anniversary of 9/11 With Downtown Remembrance Ceremony in Watertown, SD
Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - Watertown Fire Rescue hosted a solemn 25th-anniversary remembrance ceremony for the September 11 terrorist attacks at Foundation Plaza Downtown Watertown. Broadcast live by Northeast Radio SD, the 8:00 a.m. event brought together local first responders, veterans, and residents to honor the victims and heroes of 9/11.
The observance featured an honor guard procession, the raising and lowering of the American flag to half-staff, and musical tributes from a local brass band.
Chaplain Hank Roso’s Address
Fire Chaplain Hank Roso delivered the ceremony’s keynote invocation, asking the crowd to reflect on the immense sacrifices made 25 years ago. He vividly recounted the ordinary Tuesday morning that was shattered by tragedy, resulting in the loss of nearly 3,000 innocent lives from 90 nations, including 343 FDNY firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers.
Roso noted a significant change for this 25th anniversary: the addition of a seventh moment of silence to the national commemoration. This new tribute honors the thousands of recovery workers and first responders who have died from 9/11-related illnesses in the years following the attacks. He emphasized that the pledge to “never forget” extends beyond the events of the day itself to those who endured toxic exposure at Ground Zero.
Historical Reflections
Following the chaplain, local former teacher Bill Zubke presented a historical reflection poem titled “Oh Say Can You See, It’s Chronology.” He connected the sacrifices of 9/11 to a broader American history of fighting for freedom and resilience, referencing the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775 and the Civil War. His speech underscored the enduring human spirit that unites communities during crises.
