Watertown Introduces "ReLeaf": Residents Can Receive $100 for Planting a Tree, Promoting Environmental Sustainability.

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Watertown Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department is turning over a new leaf this spring with the official launch of the ReLeaf Program, an initiative designed to rebuild the community’s thinning tree canopy.

Starting immediately after Arbor Day on April 24, local residents can receive a reimbursement of up to $100 for planting one approved tree on their property. The program aims to combat the significant loss of local foliage caused by the Emerald Ash Borer while strengthening the overall health of Watertown’s urban forest.

How the Program Works

Participation is designed to be straightforward for homeowners, but there are a few key rules to ensure the new trees thrive:

·        Eligibility: The program is limited to one approved tree per property.

·        Location: Trees may be planted in private residential yards or on City boulevards.

·        Prior Approval: Residents planning to plant on a City boulevard must obtain prior approval from the Forestry Department to ensure proper species selection and placement.

·        Standards: All trees must meet specific minimum size and species requirements to qualify for the rebate.

Application Process

To take advantage of the incentive, residents should follow these steps:

1.    Purchase an approved tree species from a local nursery.

2.    Save the receipt as proof of purchase.

3.    Submit the receipt and application to the Parks & Recreation office for reimbursement.

Potential participants should act quickly, as program funds are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Once planted, the tree’s ongoing care and maintenance become the resident’s responsibility.

A full list of approved tree species and additional program details can be found on the City of Watertown website (www.watertownsd.us) or through participating local retailers.
