AAA Issues Urgent Warning: Arctic Blast Expected to Trigger Surge in Dead Batteries and Burst Pipes

Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - As an intense arctic blast grips the region, AAA South Dakota is urging residents to take action to protect their vehicles and homes. Historically, temperature drops of this magnitude lead to a dramatic spike in emergency roadside assistance calls and a wave of costly home insurance claims.

“Whenever the temperature drops this fast, we see an immediate surge in calls,” said Shawn Steward, spokesman for AAA South Dakota. “From dead batteries and frozen locks to engines that simply refuse to start, cold weather creates all kinds of problems for drivers. At the same time, homeowners face the threat of frozen pipes that can burst without warning. Acting now isn’t optional. It’s essential.”

The Battery Danger Zone

Cold weather significantly reduces a battery’s ability to hold a charge. During previous arctic blasts, battery-related issues have consistently been the top reason for AAA service calls.

To prevent being stranded, AAA recommends:

·        Test older batteries: If your battery is more than three years old, have it tested immediately.

·        Seek shelter: Park in a garage or sheltered area whenever possible.

·        Minimize drain: Ensure all lights, seat warmers, and accessories are off before shutting down the engine.

·        Listen for warning signs: “Slow cranking” when starting the engine is a primary indicator of a failing battery.

Cold Weather Impact on Electric Vehicles (EVs)

EV owners should also take extra precautions, as freezing temperatures can reduce driving range by up to 40% and significantly slow charging times. AAA suggests EV drivers pre-condition their batteries while plugged in, use heated seats instead of cabin heat to conserve power, and keep the vehicle plugged in to maintain battery temperature.

Homeowner Alert: Preventing Pipe Bursts

Plumbing systems are at high risk during extended freezes. Because water expands when it freezes, the resulting pressure can rupture pipes in walls, attics, and crawl spaces.

AAA tips to protect your home:

·        Drip the faucets: Let faucets drip slightly to keep water moving through the system.

·        Circulate heat: Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to reach the plumbing.

·        Maintain the thermostat: Keep your home temperature set to at least 55°F, even if you are traveling.

·        Locate the shutoff: Know the location of your main water shutoff valve to minimize damage if a pipe does burst.

Winter Safety Essentials

Beyond vehicle and home maintenance, AAA encourages all residents to keep a well-stocked emergency kit in their cars. Essential items include:

·        Blankets, water, and snacks.

·        Flashlight, phone charger, and jumper cables.

·        Ice scraper, snow brush, and a shovel.

·        Sand or kitty litter for tire traction.

“With extreme cold like this, preparation is everything,” added Steward. “A few simple steps can prevent a breakdown on the road or a disaster inside your home.”
