Brookings County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Burglary, Pursuit, Fires, and Hit‑and‑Run in Series of Recent Incidents

Northeast Radio SD News – Brookings County, SD - The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office has released details on several incidents reported between May 10 and May 12, including a residential burglary, a multi‑agency pursuit, two fires, and a hit‑and‑run in a school parking lot.
Residential Burglary Reported Near 468th Avenue
Deputies responded Sunday night after a homeowner reported that someone entered their residence between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on May 10. According to the report, items inside the home had been moved, and an unlocked safe was accessed. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken.
Residents in the area are asked to review home security footage for any suspicious activity and report information to Brookings County Dispatch at 605-692-2113. The case remains under investigation.
Pursuit Ends on I‑29 Overpass; Driver Arrested
A pursuit that began in Moody County entered Brookings County late Monday morning, May 11. Deputies, along with officers from the Brookings Police Department and SDSU Police Department, intercepted the fleeing vehicle on northbound I‑29.
The vehicle exited the interstate and came to a stop on the I‑29 overpass. After remaining inside the vehicle for roughly ten minutes, the driver — identified as Candice Skliris, 42, of Flandreau — was taken into custody on Moody County charges.
Early‑Morning Barn Fire Quickly Contained
The Sheriff’s Office and Brookings Fire Department responded to a barn fire on 44th Street South near Medary Avenue at 6:49 a.m. on May 12. Flames were visible inside the structure, but residents and firefighters extinguished the fire before it spread.
A small portion of the barn was damaged. No animals were injured. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Hit‑and‑Run at Sioux Valley School Parking Lot
Deputies were called to Sioux Valley School on the evening of May 12 after a white 2016 Chevy Cruze was found parked with damage to its rear bumper. The vehicle had been parked between 8:45 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. and was discovered with black scratches consistent with a collision. Damage is estimated at $1,200.
The striking vehicle is unknown. The incident remains under investigation.
Fireworks Believed to Be Cause of Grass Fire Near 219th Street
Later that night, at 10:18 p.m. on May 12, deputies and firefighters responded to a grass fire near 219th Street and 470th Avenue. The fire was contained to a ditch, and investigators located evidence of recently discharged fireworks at the scene.
Deputies identified a suspect, and charges are pending.
