Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office Reports String of Arrests Over 11-Day Period

Northeast Radio SD News – Hamlin County, SD - The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office has released details regarding several arrests made across the county between March 18th and March 28th, 2026. The incidents ranged from drug-related offenses and DUI stops to sex offender compliance violations.
Drug and Welfare Check in Hayti
On Saturday, March 28, deputies conducting a welfare check in the 300 block of 1st Street in Hayti discovered drug paraphernalia inside a residence. After obtaining a search warrant, authorities seized multiple controlled substances.
Two individuals were taken into custody and transported to the Codington County Detention Center:
· A 21-year-old Hayti woman charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Illegal Possession of Marijuana.
· A 29-year-old Hayti man charged with Ingestion of a Controlled Substance and a Parole Violation.
Sex Offender Registration Violation
On Friday, March 27, a compliance check in Hayti led to the arrest of a 54-year-old woman. Investigators determined she had been residing in a home within 500 feet of the city park—a designated community safety zone—without proper registration. She is being held at the Codington County Detention Center on a $2,000 cash-only bond for Felony Registered Sex Offender within a Community Safety Zone.
DUI and Traffic Enforcement
Deputies also handled several alcohol-related incidents on area roadways:
· Lake Poinsett Area (March 18): A 73-year-old Bruce man was stopped for speeding on U.S. Highway 81. Following field sobriety tests and a preliminary breath test (PBT) showing a 0.137 BAC, he was arrested for DUI, Open Container, and Speeding.
· Castlewood Area (March 21): A 31-year-old Castlewood man was arrested for DUI and speeding on County Road 465. His PBT indicated a 0.099 BAC.
Additional Arrests
· Rural Castlewood (March 26): Deputies responded to a report of an unwanted individual suspected of being under the influence. A 37-year-old Vienna man was arrested for a Parole Violation, with additional charges pending.
· Bryant (March 20): During a traffic stop on East Main Street, a 19-year-old woman from Bryant was arrested on an active Hamlin County warrant.
All defendants are presumed innocent under the U.S. Constitution until proven guilty.
