Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - While a South Dakota blizzard may have slowed the region’s pace this week, the energy at Joy Ranch remains at an all-time high. In a recent interview with News Broadcaster Steve Jurrens on Northeast Radio SD, Event Coordinator Mallory Olsen reflected on a whirlwind of successful February events and teased an upcoming calendar packed with culinary experiences and wellness retreats.
The ranch is fresh off two of its most significant annual celebrations: the Tim Tebow Foundation’s Night to Shine and the local favorite Daddy/Daughter Dance. Olsen described the back-to-back events as a beautiful, if chaotic, success.
A Royal Celebration: Night to Shine
On Friday, February 13, Joy Ranch transformed into a world-class prom for individuals with special needs. From limo rides and red carpets to pampering stations, the event offered what Olsen calls the “royal treatment.”
“It was like planning for a wedding,” Olsen remarked. “And then all of a sudden it’s over, and all that’s left are memories—and a mess. It’s like a well-oiled machine now, our third year doing it... You’ve got your volunteers checking in at the bunkhouse, and then your Kings and Queens getting hair and makeup done.”
The night featured party-bus tours and karaoke, with Olsen noting that many guests travel from across the state because it is a one-of-a-kind experience in South Dakota.
“Cuteness Overload” at the Ranch
Following the prom, the ranch hosted the Daddy/Daughter Dance, an event Olsen summarized as pure joy.
“Holy moly, I’ve never seen anything like that. It was cuteness overload all weekend. Dresses, tiaras, shiny glittery shoes, tuxes... and lots of sugar. Our head wrangler, Morgan, was in charge of the cotton candy machine—it was like a big tornado, and she was just covered in it”
Looking Ahead: Culinary Delights and Wellness
The ranchisn’tt slowing down. On Tuesday, February 24, Joy Ranch will host its next Chef’s Night featuring 2nd Street Station. The menu promises high-end flair, including a Chocolate Ganache Cake, Cheesecake-Stuffed Strawberries, and an Italian Grinder Chopped Salad.
Olsen admitted with a laugh that the sophisticated menu made her feel “uncultured” at first glance, but emphasized that the $50 tickets are a vital way for the community to support the ranch’s mission.
Beyond dining, March brings a focus on wellness with the Women’s Retreat (March 6–8), featuring:
· Yoga sessions by Revive.
· Charcuterie classes by Praying Grace.
· Succulent workshops by The Flower Shop.
· Guest speakers, including author Julianne Endres.
The Mission Continues
Despite the fun, Olsen reminded listeners that every event supports Joy Ranch’s core mission of empowering individuals of all abilities through equine companionship. Fundraising continues for the ranch’s capital campaign as new facilities, like the multi-purpose event center, continue to take shape.
“The community has just been super generous with donations,” Olsen said. “It definitely takes a village... It’s heartwarming. Driving home that night [after Night to Shine], I was just like, ‘Wow.’”
