Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2026: Injury Crashes Drop Nearly 40% as Drug Arrests, Traffic Citations Rise

Northeast Radio SD News – Sturgis, SD - Injury crashes saw a dramatic drop. At the same time, drug enforcement and traffic citations increased during the 2026 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, according to final weekly statistics released Saturday by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
The official seven-day report, compiled from 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, to 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, covers enforcement and crash activity across both the Sturgis and Rapid City districts.
State troopers reported 3 fatal crashes resulting in 3 fatalities during the reporting period, down slightly from 4 fatalities recorded during the same timeframe in 2025.
Most notably, injury crashes dropped significantly year-over-year. Troopers responded to 38 injury crashes across the two districts, marking a nearly 40% reduction compared to the 63 injury crashes logged during the same period last year. Non-injury accidents held steady at 27.
By the Numbers: Enforcement & Arrests
Traffic citations issued by the Highway Patrol rose to 1,556, up from 1,361 in 2025, while total written warnings slightly decreased from 4,367 to 4,202.
A breakdown of major enforcement actions includes:
· DUI Arrests: 105 total (76 in Sturgis, 29 in Rapid City), down from 112 last year.
· Felony Drug Arrests: 100 total (81 in Sturgis, 19 in Rapid City), up from 94 last year.
· Misdemeanor Drug Arrests: 197 total (160 in Sturgis, 37 in Rapid City), down from 238 last year.
· Custodial Arrests: 214 total (152 in Sturgis, 62 in Rapid City).
· Asset Seizures: Troopers seized $6,116 in cash related to law enforcement operations. No vehicles were seized during this year’s reporting period.
Notable Friday Crash Reports
The Highway Patrol detailed six separate motorcycle crashes occurring Friday afternoon and evening, Aug. 14, including one resulting in life-threatening injuries:
· U.S. Highway 14A (Mile Marker 31) – 4:02 p.m.: A 47-year-old male driver operating a 2009 Harley-Davidson lost control after experiencing a tire failure. The vehicle left the roadway, separating the driver from the motorcycle. The driver, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City.
· U.S. Highway 16A (Mile Marker 48) – 1:25 p.m.: A 42-year-old male riding a 2008 Harley-Davidson failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line, and collided head-on with a 2024 Harley-Davidson operated by a 37-year-old male. Both drivers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Monument Health in Rapid City.
· Playhouse Road – 1:49 p.m.: A 69-year-old male driver failed to negotiate a right curve on a 2017 Harley-Davidson, causing the motorcycle to overturn. A 59-year-old female passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Monument Health in Rapid City.
· U.S. Highway 16A (Mile Marker 54) – 2:07 p.m.: A 63-year-old female riding a 2002 Harley-Davidson suffered an equipment failure, causing her to lose control and leave the roadway. The driver, who was wearing a helmet, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City.
· S.D. Highway 44 (Mile Marker 28) – 10:33 p.m.: A 21-year-old male riding a 2021 Kawasaki failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway. He was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City with non-life-threatening injuries.
· U.S. Highway 14A (Mile Marker 49) – 11:50 p.m.: A 42-year-old male operating a 2019 Harley-Davidson failed to negotiate a curve with a 27-year-old female passenger. Both were separated from the motorcycle and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was transported to Monument Health in Sturgis; the passenger declined medical transport.
All crash information released by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety remains preliminary pending final investigation results.
