Northeast Radio SD News – Sioux Falls - The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota collected more than $9.5 million through legal actions during the 2025 fiscal year.

U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons announced that $9,516,233.90 was secured through criminal fines, restitution, loan defaults, bankruptcy, forfeiture, and civil enforcement efforts. Additionally, the district collaborated with other components of the Department of Justice to collect an additional $16.7 million.

Of the total collections, $8.9 million was derived from criminal cases. From that amount, the office returned $8,801,058.91 directly to victims of crime, ensuring justice and support for those affected by criminal acts. The remaining funds were deposited into the Crime Victims Fund, which assists victims nationwide with medical expenses, lost wages, and mental health counseling.

“Thanks to the diligence and hard work of our U.S. Attorneys and the highly skilled staff in our Financial Litigation and Asset Recovery Units on behalf of South Dakota victims and taxpayers, we have held criminals accountable and done everything we can to make victims whole,” U.S. Attorney Parsons said.

The office also reported collecting more than $65.2 million in asset forfeiture actions during FY 2025. These forfeited assets are used to restore funds to crime victims and support various law enforcement purposes.

Federal law requires defendants to pay restitution to victims of certain crimes who have suffered physical injury or financial loss. While restitution is paid to the victim, criminal fines and felony assessments are paid into the Crime Victims Fund to support state and federal victim assistance programs.

Parsons stated the office will continue to prioritize the collection of restitution and debts owed to the federal government as a critical part of its mission.
