Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The Watertown Area United Way Board of Directors has announced that Executive Director Laura Heathcote will be stepping down, with her resignation effective on February 28, 2026. The organization plans to use the coming months for a structured transition to new leadership.

In her letter to the Board, Heathcote reflected on her tenure with the organization.

“Serving this organization and our community has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life,” Heathcote wrote. “I am deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in me, the partnerships we have strengthened, and the shared commitment we’ve upheld to support local families, children, seniors, and individuals. Together, we have built momentum, deepened impact, and continued the long legacy of what it truly means to Live United.”

Board President Melissa Herrboldt expressed the Board's appreciation for Heathcote’s dedicated service.

“Laura has served this organization with heart, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to community impact,” Herrboldt said. “Her work has strengthened our programs, expanded our partnerships, and helped move the Watertown Area United Way forward in meaningful ways. We are grateful for her service and wish her the very best in her next chapter.”

Commitment to a Seamless Handover

Heathcote emphasized her commitment to ensuring a seamless handoff before her departure. She stated she will focus on closing out campaign responsibilities, organizing essential documents, and supporting all necessary preparations for a thoughtful handover. Heathcote also offered to be available on a limited basis after February 28 to answer questions or provide clarity during the leadership transition.

The Board has begun the process of opening the Executive Director position. The strategic goal is to select a new leader who will have the opportunity to shadow and train with Heathcote before her effective departure date. This planned transition period is intended to maintain continuity in fundraising efforts, community relations, and ongoing initiatives.

“We are committed to a smooth and well-supported leadership transition,” Herrboldt added. “The next Executive Director will step into an organization poised for continued impact thanks to Laura’s dedicated guidance.”
