Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The Watertown Figure Skate Club (WFSC) is entering its winter season with record-breaking growth and new national competitive opportunities. Coach Taylor Johnson recently joined Steve Jurrens and Dorene Foster on Northeast Radio SD to discuss the club’s transition to a year-round program and the upcoming “Learn to Skate” winter session.
Winter Registration and “Ice Explorers”
Registration for the eight-week winter session is currently open. Classes will begin the week of December 28. Johnson noted that the winter session is typically the club’s largest, as many children receive new skates during the holiday season.
The club offers a specialized “Ice Explorers” program for children as young as 2.5 to 3 years old. To build confidence, the curriculum begins with off-ice orientation. “We don’t even put them on the ice for the first few lessons,” Johnson explained. “They go on tours of the rink and build coordination in their skates so that when they hit the ice, it isn’t scary.”
From Watertown to the National Stage
The WFSC has expanded significantly beyond local lessons. Last year, the club launched a National Showcase team, sending 14 skaters to a national competition in Michigan, where they placed in the top 10.
Building on that success, Johnson has introduced a National Theater on Ice team. In June 2026, three full teams—totaling roughly 16 skaters—will travel to California to compete. The teams perform Broadway-style “Descendants” themed routines, complete with intricate costumes, wigs, and pirate ship props.
“We are proving what we can accomplish coming from Watertown, South Dakota,” Johnson said. “We are competing against the best of the best in the United States and holding our own.”
Community and Adult Programs
The club’s curriculum isn’t just for aspiring figure skaters; it also features a heavy focus on hockey skills. By teaching “edges,” the club helps local hockey players improve their power and endurance. Furthermore, the club’s adult program continues to grow, with skaters as old as 64 competing in recent events.
Residents are encouraged to follow the Watertown Figure Skate Club on Facebook for updates on the annual ice show in March and April, which will feature routines from the national qualifying teams.
The Importance of Community Engagement
Community engagement plays a vital role in the success of the WFSC. The club collaborates with local schools and organizations to promote skating as a healthy and enjoyable activity. This partnership not only fosters a sense of belonging but also encourages families to participate together.
The club's outreach programs aim to introduce figure skating to a broader audience. By hosting free introductory classes, they invite children and adults to experience the joy of skating. This initiative has led to increased participation and a stronger community bond.
Future Prospects for the Watertown Figure Skate Club
As the WFSC looks to the future, the focus remains on growth and development. Plans for additional training sessions and workshops are in the works. These initiatives will provide skaters with more opportunities to hone their skills and prepare for competitions.
Moreover, the club is exploring partnerships with local businesses to secure sponsorships. This support will help fund travel expenses for competitions and enhance the overall experience for skaters.
Conclusion
The Watertown Figure Skate Club is not just a place for learning to skate; it is a community hub that fosters growth, resilience, and opportunity. With its innovative programs and commitment to excellence, the WFSC is paving the way for future generations of skaters.
For those interested in joining, registration for the winter session is now open. Don't miss the chance to be part of this thriving community.
