Watertown Lakers Launch Learn to Play 10U Developmental Program with NHL, NHLPA, and USA Hockey

Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The Watertown Lakers, in partnership with the NHL, NHLPA, and USA Hockey, will launch a revamped Learn to Play 10U Developmental Program this fall aimed at making hockey more accessible for local families.


The program welcomes children ages 5–10 (birth years 2015–2020) and is designed for beginners as well as those who already feel comfortable on the ice. Practices emphasize skating fundamentals, basic hockey skills, teamwork, confidence, and fun, all led by USA Hockey–certified coaches and trained volunteers.


New players will receive a complete set of brand-new head-to-toe hockey equipment to keep, and a USA Hockey membership is included in the first session. Returning players may borrow gear from the Watertown Hockey Association for a small rental fee. Each session includes 16 on-ice practices held twice weekly to provide consistent, skill-focused development.


Season schedule and logistics:


·        Session 1: October 16 – December 4

·        Session 2: December 8 – January 29

·        Session 3: February 2 – March 26

·        Days and times: Mondays and Thursdays, 6:30–7:15 p.m.

·        Location: Prairie Lakes Ice Arena


Program fees:


·        First-time players: $300 (includes equipment, USA Hockey membership, and first-session registration)

·        Returning players: $100 per session

·        Equipment rental for returning players: $70 for full gear, $30 for skates (rental use through March 31)

·        Equipment checkout date: To be announced


Parents and guardians can register to reserve spots at http://ltpnhl.leagueapps.com/events/4700549-watertown-lakers. Space is limited to ensure personal attention and confidence-building for each participant.


Wee Wobblers Hockey for ages 4–6.


A companion Wee Wobblers program for children ages 4–6 (born 2019–2021) will run two short sessions focused on skating basics and introductory stick work.


Sessions are:

·        Session 1: November 3 – November 24

·        Session 2: January 8 – January 29

·        Days and times: Mondays and Thursdays, 6:30–7:15 p.m.

·        Fee: $35 per session. Skates and helmets will be provided as needed by the Watertown Hockey Association.
