Watertown Police to Enhance Public Safety with New Narcotics Identification Tech

Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The Watertown City Council has officially cleared the way for the Watertown Police Department (WPD) to bolster its toolkit in the fight against the opioid epidemic. At a meeting held on February 2, 2026, the Council authorized, as part of the consent agenda, the department to apply for and accept a $50,000 grant from the South Dakota Opioid Settlement Community Grant Program.

The funding, administered by the South Dakota Department of Social Services’ Division of Behavioral Health, is dedicated to a critical piece of equipment: the Metrohm TacticID mobile narcotics identification device.

Rapid Detection, Increased Safety

The TacticID is a state-of-the-art handheld tool designed to rapidly identify unknown and potentially lethal substances on scene. One of its most vital features is the ability to detect fentanyl, heroin, and synthetic opioids within seconds—all without requiring officers to open or handle the material physically.

“With the influx of narcotics, including fentanyl... it is crucial for law enforcement officers to identify these narcotics to prevent further harm to our community,” said WPD Detective Martin Geier, who authored the grant request. “This device will allow the WPD to ID substances within minutes of responding to an incident.”

A Tool for Saving Lives

The benefits of this technology extend beyond law enforcement investigations. By providing real-time data, the device will assist:

·        First Responders & Paramedics: Knowing the exact substance involved in an overdose allows for faster, more informed medical treatment.

·        Healthcare Providers: Real-time information helps hospital staff save precious minutes during critical poisoning calls.

·        Officer Safety: Reducing the need to handle dangerous powders significantly lowers the risk of accidental exposure for WPD officers.

Zero Cost to Taxpayers

The acquisition of this technology has no net financial impact on the City of Watertown. The grant is structured as a 100% reimbursement program, meaning the City will be fully repaid for the purchase. Additionally, no local matching funds are required, and there is no obligation to provide ongoing funding after the grant period ends.
