Northeast Radio SD News – Brookings County, SD - A semi‑tractor fire early Friday morning forced the temporary closure of the southbound I‑29 on‑ramp at mile marker 140, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and firefighters were dispatched around 12:45 a.m. after a report of a truck on fire. When crews arrived, they found the semi‑tractor fully engulfed roughly halfway down the ramp, prompting officials to shut down the on‑ramp for public safety while fire crews worked.
According to the driver, he had been traveling near mile marker 142 in a 2016 Peterbilt when he noticed a burning odor. After pulling off the interstate to investigate, he saw the front end of the tractor glowing. He was able to retrieve personal belongings and exit the vehicle before flames overtook the cab.
“Upon arrival, first responders found the tractor fully engulfed in flames approximately halfway down the exit ramp,” the release stated.
Firefighters from White and Brookings fire departments extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported.
The tractor and its contents were valued at approximately $60,000. Investigators believe the fire was mechanical in nature, and no foul play is suspected.
Aurora Auto Body and Towing removed the damaged vehicle. After debris cleanup and final suppression efforts, the ramp was reopened. Motorists experienced minor delays during the roughly 2½‑hour closure.
Responding agencies included the Brookings Fire Department, White Fire Department, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
