Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - A Watertown man wounded in an officer‑involved shooting outside Yankton High School in December 2024 has been sentenced to prison following his conviction earlier this year.
Andrew Jondahl, 41, of Watertown, was sentenced Wednesday to four and a half years in the South Dakota State Penitentiary, with a total 30‑year sentence and 26 years, six months suspended, according to court officials.
Jondahl was in Yankton for a high school wrestling meet when officers were called to the school parking lot. Law enforcement reported that Jondahl had two weapons on his person, and the situation escalated until two officers fired their weapons, striking him multiple times.
A Yankton County jury found Jondahl guilty in January of two counts of Aggravated Assault Against Law Enforcement. He was also convicted of possession of a gun on school grounds, according to the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office.
Investigators determined Jondahl had been holding two shotguns when he exited a pickup and faced officers during the confrontation. He later tested positive for alcohol with a blood alcohol content of .152 percent, while both officers tested negative for alcohol and drugs.
Prosecutors requested a 50-year prison sentence, with 25 years suspended.
“I am committed to ensuring the safety of officers and the public,” said Attorney General Jackley. “When individuals put others at risk, I will pursue appropriate consequences to uphold accountability and protect those who serve our communities.”
Jondahl will remain in the Yankton County Jail
