Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Watertown Police Department has officially expanded its emergency response infrastructure with the addition of a new Armored Rescue Vehicle. Designed to strengthen public safety, the vehicle is aimed at providing enhanced protection for citizens, first responders, and law enforcement personnel during high-stakes tactical operations and severe crises.

The newly acquired vehicle, a Lenco BearCat, functions strictly as a rescue and defensive platform. Authority figures emphasized that the vehicle is designated for low-frequency, high-risk emergencies rather than everyday policing. Its primary operational mandate includes providing protected transport and specialized support during active threat scenarios, barricaded subjects, high-risk rescues, and dangerous severe weather emergencies.

Our mission has always been the protection of life,” the Watertown Police Department stated in an official release. “This vehicle is an important safety resource that helps us better protect our officers, EMS personnel, firefighters, and most importantly, the citizens we serve during dangerous and unpredictable incidents.”

Addressing potential questions regarding its deployment, the department explicitly noted that the Armored Rescue Vehicle will not be integrated into routine patrol operations or standard everyday law enforcement duties. Instead, its utilization will be strictly confined to critical incidents, tactical training exercises, and scheduled community engagement events where specialized safety barriers are necessary.

In alignment with its commitment to transparency and public education, the Watertown Police Department is rolling out a series of community outreach efforts. Over the next few weeks, the agency plans to leverage social media updates, release educational materials, and host public events to keep residents thoroughly informed about the vehicle’s explicit capabilities and strategic purpose.

The broader community will have its very first opportunity to inspect the vehicle firsthand at the upcoming Touch-A-Truck Event, taking place at the Watertown Regional Airport on Saturday, May 23, 2026. Attendees will be able to view the vehicle up close, meet local law enforcement officers, and learn more about how the asset reinforces regional public safety operations.

Furthermore, as part of its community-oriented focus, the department announced plans to host a “Fill the Rescue Vehicle” food drive. Organized in partnership with local civic groups, the drive will utilize the vehicle to collect donations for area families in need while offering residents an informal environment to ask questions and engage directly with officers
