Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - After severe weather forced a Saturday postponement, the Watertown Post 17 Arrows hit the diamond on Sunday but couldn’t find their footing, dropping both games of a doubleheader to the Rapid City Post 22 Hardhats, 4-3 and 12-2.
Here is a breakdown of Sunday’s action:
Game 1: Rapid City 4, Watertown 3
In the opener, Rapid City wasted no time, jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Arrows struggled to generate offense early against Rapid City starter Brody Lee, but they finally broke through in the fifth.
Markus Pitkin provided the spark for Watertown, launching a massive three-run home run to cut the Hardhats’ lead to a single run.
Watertown threatened to tie or take the lead in the top of the seventh inning after a Cain Everson walk and a Carter Busiker single put two runners aboard. However, the Rapid City bullpen clamped down. Back-to-back strikeouts of Pitkin and Sam Olson, followed by a Jonathan Lake groundout, stranded the runners and ended the Arrows’ comeback bid.
Game 1 Notables:
·        Pitching: Rapid City’s Brody Lee earned the win, holding Watertown to just one hit and three runs over 4 2/3 innings. Tripp Jorgenson took the loss for the Arrows, allowing four runs on five hits and walking five over 5 1/3 innings.
·        Hitting: Watertown was held to just three hits in the contest, courtesy of Pitkin, Busiker, and Lake.
Game 2: Rapid City 12, Watertown 2 (5 Innings)
The Hardhats’ offense carried its momentum into the second game, once again taking early control by plating four runs in the first inning. They added two more in the fourth before putting the game away for good in the fifth. Scoring five runs on four hits in the final frame, Rapid City triggered the run rule to secure the Sunday sweep.
Rapid City pitcher Declan Mickley kept the Arrows’ bats largely in check, tossing a complete five innings while giving up five hits and two runs to earn the victory.
Game 2 Notables:
·        Pitching: Kooper Heister took the loss for Watertown, pitching 3 1/3 innings while allowing seven runs on four hits and six walks.
·        Watertown Hitting: Kye Palson and Ashton Rabine led the offense for the Arrows, each tallying a hit and an RBI. Lincoln Schutt, Jonathan Lake, and Hansen also recorded hits.
·        Rapid City Hitting: Josh Elder went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Hadley Burrus and Kain McLeod drove in two runs apiece for the Hardhats.
