Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The City of Watertown’s latest financial report reveals a healthy start to the new year, with sales tax collections for January 2026 outperforming both the previous year and long-term averages.


According to the Sales Tax Comparison History report, the city’s three primary tax categories—the 1st Penny General, 2nd Penny Capital, and BBB (Bed, Board, and Beverage) taxes—all saw significant year-over-year increases.


January Performance Breakdown

The data for January 2026 shows a consistent upward trend in consumer spending and local economic activity:


·         1st Penny General & 2nd Penny Capital: Both funds collected $843,562 in January, representing a 5.12% increase (an additional $40,854) over January 2025.

·         BBB Sales Tax: The tax on hospitality and dining saw the most dramatic jump, rising 14.06% to $100,820. This is an increase of $12,167 compared to the same month last year.


Long-Term Economic Resilience

While the single-month jump is notable, the 12-month rolling data suggests a sustained period of economic health for the community.

The report also highlights that over the most recent six-month period, General and Capital tax revenues grew by 5.29%, while BBB revenues rose by 5.53% compared to the same period the year prior.

The “1st Penny” supports general city operations, while the “2nd Penny” is dedicated to capital improvements and infrastructure projects. The growth in these funds provides the City Council with additional resources to manage municipal services and long-term development.
